Sisterhood News

LEV LE’LEV — Heart To Heart

When I hear the word Sisterhood, I immediately think of connections…with our temple, with Temple Beth-El School, with our Jewish community at large, with each other.

Even though we come from diverse experiences, different backgrounds and span many years in age, our members are all part of this connection. We are first and foremost linked to one another by common purpose.

We are devoted to our mission of supporting all facets of our synagogue. We create and participate in events that are designed to enhance our spiritual experience, to raise funds, to educate, to generate social change as well as to give all our volunteer members an opportunity for enjoying one another.

It is the intention of the Sisterhood Board of Directors to offer a variety of activities and events, continuing some from the past and developing others, that honor our Jewish connections, commitments and celebrations. These will be announced in the monthly bulletin, offered in the weekly e-mail announcements, posted on our Temple Beth-El web site and presented in colorful flyers.

Go to www.womenofreformjudaism.org and learn about the WRJ Lilith Salons and The Torah: A Women’s Commentary Study Guide Program. These are two of the new activities we are adding to our Events Calendar this year. We hope you will join us and connect with us for the coming year.

"L'shanah tovah tikatevi v'taihatemi!"

"May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year!"

Lighting the Shabbat Candles

One of the most beautiful and enduring rituals of our faith is lighting the Shabbat candles on Friday night. Traditionally, it is the privilege of women to perform this labor of love so beginning on Friday night, September 24th, and each week thereafter, a member of the WRJ Sisterhood will be asked to light the candles.  Each of you will be asked in advance, and your name will appear in the weekly announcements prior to your designated Shabbat.

Welcome to the Sisterhood

Shalom and welcome to our congregation, Sisterhood and our area. Even if you have not yet joined Temple Beth-El, we invite you to become a member of WRJ Sisterhood. We extend this courtesy to women for one year prior to joining Temple. Our dues are listed below. We have several levels of membership which will bring additional privileges. Sisterhood provides funds for many things at Temple and in the community. We provide for the Oneg Shabbatim, gifts for Bar and Bat Mitzvah candidates, confirmation gifts, guide dog puppies for the blind or disabled, scholarships for our young members to attend Union of Reform Judaism camps and trips to leadership conferences, and donations to the Textbook Fund at Religious School as well as the Temple Building Fund. Additionally, we support programs to strengthen Judaism, learning, and leadership.

We have planned and worked on many events and we are looking forward to a wonderful, wonderful year at Temple Beth-El, We have many exciting programs planned for this year and hope that you will enjoy them, take advantage of them, and . . . help with them.

Your paid membership entitles you to a wonderful luncheon with prizes and entertainment. Many of our events are repeated annually. One of these is our Sisterhood Shabbaton generally in April, which is a wonderful weekend of spirituality, sisterhood, and learning.

Leah..........$40 (paid up membership event)
Rachel......$72 (paid up membership event plus 10% discount at the Judaica Shop)
Sarah........$108 (paid up membership event, 10% discount at the Judaica Shop plus a package of Uniongrams)

In addition, we ask that you make a voluntary contribution to the YES fund of at least $5.00. Our Sisterhood has pledged its support in this amount per member. The Yes fund is the Youth, Education, and Special Projects fund of the Women of Reform Judaism.

Thank you in advance for your support. Please consider joining us this year. All checks are payable to WRJ Sisterhood. Please also fill in the Membership and Committee Form and, if you wish, indicate areas in which you might want to participate. If you have any questions, please call the Temple at 677-2484 and press 11 to leave us a message and we will call you back. I look forward to meeting you.

Best Wishes for a Healthy and Happy Year,

Barbara Steinberg
President
