Adult Education

We offer a host of programs for adults including our Jewish Film Series, monthly book review club, our library, and Adult Bar and Bat Mitzvah education. We often feature Scholars in Residence and speakers on a variety of timely Jewish topics. Monday “Lunch Bunch” with Rabbi Altman is an ongoing tradition, during which congregants study with the Rabbi and with each other. We sponsor many cultural events at Temple Beth-El such as concerts and plays. Our yearly Kristallnacht Observance is recognized as an important event throughout the community. We are active in many community service projects such as Habitat for Humanity and Family Renew, which provides short-term housing for homeless families reintegrating themselves into the work force. Our Social Action Committee is devoted to the betterment of the community and welcomes participation and creative solutions to problems facing both our Jewish and non-Jewish neighbors.

Adult Education Committee

Keep your eyes and ears alert for two new educational programs in late winter and early spring. The new Adult Education Committee is hard at work to bring you interesting and joyful Jewish learning in the formats of a 4-week course with the Rabbi and hands-on Jewish cooking.

We have great ideas for future programs such as Kabbalah, Jewish Comedy; Yiddish for Beginners; Mah Jongg lessons, etc. but we want to hear from you. What do you want? Contact Gwen Kotler or Sy Weiner, committee co-chairs, with your ideas, questions, and/or interest in joining us as a member of the Adult Education Committee.

Please think of the Adult Education Committee when you are making a donation to one of the Temple Funds. We will have a modest budget for speaker fees, marketing, and light refreshments at our programs.

Yiddish Film Festival

Yiddish Film Festival 2009

May 17 Mirele Efros, made in 1940, as one of the last Yiddish film heyday which deals with a sort of “female King Lear” demanding attention and manipulating her family. The film was shot in NYC on a very low budget but despite technical difficulties it is a gripping tale. 2-4 PM

Thank You Rabbi Altman

Over four Tuesday evenings our Rabbi explained and discussed Lamentations, Job, Ecclesiastes, and Proverbs. These four books of the Tanach are known as the “Wisdom Literature or Ketuvim”.

We learned a lot but more importantly we questioned a lot. This calls for more Jewish Adult Education.

Thank you, Rabbi. We are fortunate to have someone of your caliber as our spiritual leader.

Jewish Book Club

May 21Maimonides” by Sherwin B. Nuland

June 25The Plot Against America” by Philip Roth

We will meet at 7 PM and light refreshments will be served

Jerry Goodman is the chairperson for this book club. He chose the books from a list of books the URJ recommends. A lay leader will present the book each time and will guide the discussion in a format that allows everyone to talk. We will begin the book club with a minimum of 10 participants. Books will be fiction and non-fiction. Each person will be expected to obtain his/her own copy of the book. The library is a possibility and we suggest Amazon.com. Used books on this site are plentiful and usually in very good condition, and the price is right!

E-mail or call Jerry (jerrygood3@aol.com; 386-682-4399) or Therese at the Temple office (therese@templebeth-el.us; 386-677-2484, extension 10)

Please join us in the fun and excitement of discovering books by Jewish authors. The discussions promise to be lively and stimulating. You may meet a new friend as well.
